Whatchama-Whosit

In the end, she called them.

Well, she called the hotel suite.

Devin picked up the phone.

“Hey,” she said. “It’s me.” She looked at Cal, then firmed her jaw. “We’ve just met with the seers. We’re likely going to make one more stop. But we’ll be back soon.”

“‘Lex––”

“Just listen, Dev.”

She gave him a high-level summary of what the two seers said, including that Mara gave them the name and address of a local sorceress.

Alexis then told them to stay in the hotel.

She again advised them to get some sleep.

She told them to be ready to leave, hopefully in the morning.

Devin tried to hide it, but Alexis practically felt his relief at that last part.

The longer she talked, the more Alexis found herself glad she was doing this over the phone, and hadn’t opted to go back to the hotel to deal with Devin or Jules in person.

Her two friends definitely would have tried to talk her into skipping the Thai sorceress and booking them flights back to LAX, asap.

As it was, Devin pointed out she’d gotten the referral from two deeply bizarre-sounding seers, only one of whom Alexis even sort of knew, and both of whom may or may not be evil themselves.

If Alexis had gone back to the hotel, Jules definitely would have chimed in on Devin’s side. Both of her best pals would have tried to pressure her into going home, as in go home right now, to work with people they all knew and trusted in L.A.

Alexis could even see their point.

Based on what Mara and Varlan said, there was some chance the Red Dragon couldn’t do his summoning spell without her. If she headed for Los Angeles now, that might be as good a way as any to put distance between her and Cal’s jackass of a dad.

If the Red Dragon needed her nearby for his Dark Gods summoning spell, the world’s only Lightbringer being on an airplane over the Pacific Ocean might be the most effective means of thwarting him in the short term.

But, as logical as it sounded when Devin said it, Alexis’ gut screamed it would be a huge, terrible, world-ending mistake.

Alexis also knew Devin.

She knew full-well the werewolf’s highly logical mind was mostly being employed simply to generate a highly logical-sounding excuse.

Devin and Jules were dying to go home.

Alexis could hear it in Devin’s voice, even now.

Devin was feeling the alpha werewolf thing, big time. It had definitely grown worse than when she’d last seen him, probably because he’d spent the last hour or so talking to every member of his pack, if only to reassure them all he was still in one piece.

Alexis had exactly zero doubt what the pack would be telling Devin to do.

Jules wasn’t much better, truthfully.

The half-fae was one of the most social people Alexis knew, with friends all over Los Angeles, not to mention a large and tight-knit adoptive family of very outgoing humans who more or less worshipped the ground Jules walked on.
